What to expect
We have tested several day trips by speedboat to the Surin Islands and the tours that we recommend are not cheap. It’s a long way to go and the fuel costs money. The easiest way to make tours cheaper is to put more people on the boat. Another way is to reduce the distance that the boat travels.
The tour that we recommend uses a boat that is registered for 42 passengers and takes 35 maximum (but often fewer). The departure point is at Ban Nam Ken pier (30 minutes drive north of Khao Lak) and the speedboat ride takes 90 minutes.
This cheaper alternative takes a few more passengers and departs from Kuraburi pier. Kuraburi pier 90 minutes drive north of Khao Lak.
The speedboat ride from Kuraburi to the the Surin Islands is 60 minutes.
We think that it’s worth paying a bit more to be on a boat with fewer passengers. It’s easier to move around on board, to don fins and to enter and exit the water. It’s also easier for the staff to supervise in water activities. Plus if the weather turns it can be wet and bumpy sitting in the front of the boat. On the uncrowded boats there is space for all guests to move to the back where the ride is smoother and it’s undercover.
We also think that it’s preferable to spent 30 minutes in a minibus and 90 minutes on a boat rather than 90 minutes on a minibus and 60 minutes on a boat.
