Full Moon Party Koh Phangan
Thailand’s famous beach party
The notorious Koh Phangan full moon party is now legendary and thousands of travelers flock to the island every month. It’s a cacophony of noise, colour and writhing semi naked bodies all doing the things that mother told you not to.
If you are a backpacker or a party animal a trip to Koh Phangan is probably on your schedule. There are other parties, Black Moon (no moon) or Half Moon for example. But these have never taken off in the same way that the full moon party has. Other islands have also tried to imitate Koh Phangan’s full moon party but the original is still the best.
Koh Phangan is in the gulf of Thailand between Koh Tao (diving Mecca) and Koh Samui (Thailand’s third largest island). It’s a beautiful island, largely unspoiled. Most of the month it’s sleepy. But once a month it’s invaded by thirty thousand plus people, all dancing, drinking, wearing body paint, piercings and very little else. They come to dance and sing with like minded hedonists. The party people are from all over the world.
Full moon party security
A few tips:
Check your dates. Sometimes the actual party is not on the actual lunar calendar date.
Finding accommodation on party night is a nightmare. Book in advance. Had Rin beach is the main beach and prices for accommodation go up over full moon. If you actually want to get some sleep you might consider staying on a different beach. You can also get a speedboat in and out from Koh Samui, instead of staying in Koh Phangnan.
Similarly with transport to Koh Phangan, book in advance. Flights, ferries and buses to Koh Samui will also get booked up in the few days before the party.
Where there are crowds of people you will find undesirables who will try and take advantage of people in an inebriated state. So be aware and stay with your friends. Don’t accept drinks off strangers and do not under any circumstances take or buy drugs. Drugs are illegal in all of Thailand, don’t believe anyone who tells you otherwise. Penalties for possession or dealing are high. Undercover police operate at the full moon party and Thai prisons are not somewhere you want to end up for the rest of your life. A little common sense goes a long way, even on holiday.
How to get to the full moon party
To get to Koh Phangan you can first fly (Bangkok Airways) or ferry (via Surat Thani) to Koh Samui. Then get a ferry from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan. Regular buses run from Bangkok to Surat Thani, they take about ten hours. Trains also run from Bangkok to Surat Thani, they are slower than the buses but maybe a nicer way to travel.
