Island hopping Phi Phi
Phi Phi is more than one island. There are six islands in the archipelago that comprises the Had Nopparattara Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park with an area that covers 387.90 km². It is one of the most beautiful tropical island chains in the world, and one of the most easily accessible, from Phuket, Krabi and Koh Lanta.
Administratively Phi Phi Islands are part of Ao Nang sub district of Krabi province. This can cause some confusion when looking at addresses for hotels that are located at Phi Phi Donbut have a Krabi address.
How is Phi Phi pronounced? The “h” is silent, so Phi Phi is pronounced Pee Pee. (Phuket is pronounced Pooket).
Koh Phi Phi Don
All tourists who stay at Phi Phi stay on the island of Koh Phi Phi Don (Koh or Ko means island in Thai). Most accommodation is in the Ton Sai bay area, also referred to as Ton sai village. This is where the main pier is and where ferries come into. From here you can get longtail boats to other beaches around Phi Phi.
In recent years as the number of tourists wishing to stay at Phi Phi has exploded, more resorts have sprung up on other parts of the islands. Loh Dalam bay, just to the north of Ao Ton sai is pretty much full of resorts. Other beaches, especially on the north east of the island, are quieter and without the backpacker party scene that characterizes Tonsai at night.
Koh Phi Phi Ley
To the south of Phi Phi Don is Phi Phi Ley Island. There is no accommodation on Phi Phi Ley, just a park ranger station (ready to collect your park fees). This is picture postcard Phi Phi and is where you will find Maya Bay (“The Beach”) plus other beautiful spots like Loh Samah Bay and Pilay Cove.
Every tour from Phuket and Krabi visits these areas so if you want to beat the crowds you need to go early or late.
Koh Bida Nok and Koh Bida Nai
South of Phi Phi Ley are the two small limestone karst islands of Bida Nai and Bida Nok. These islands are where the dive boats do most of their dives. The impressive hard and soft corals are home to myriads of marine life including sharks and rays.
Bamboo Island
Called Koh Mai Phai in Thai, Bamboo Island is a drop of white sand surrounded by turquoise water. It’s to the north of Phi Phi Don so if you are island hopping from Phi Phi Don you may need to choose either Phi Phi Ley or Bamboo Island as they are in opposite directions.
Mosquito Island
Koh Yung is another small island north of Phi Phi Don which has beautiful coral in shallow water ideal for snorkeling. Unfortunately it’s currently off limits to tourists.
