Snorkeling with manta rays

Where to snorkel with manta rays in Thailand

It seems like every one is seeing manta rays at the moment. They are being seen by guests on the Reggae Queen liveaboard and the Oktavia liveaboard.

The most common place for sightings is Koh Bon which has always been the best place, it’s where the mantas come to be cleaned. They are also being seen at Koh Tachai. Both Koh Bon and Koh Tachai islands are within the Similan Islands national park which is open to boats from November to April. The best months for manta ray sightings are January to April.

We do not have snorkeling day trips to going to Koh Bon or Koh Tachai, you can only get there by liveaboard.

Manta rays can also be seen at the more northern Similan dive sites, around the big granite boulders, but only the dive boats go there.

The same is true of Racha Noi, Hin Daeng and Hin Muang which are all dive sites south of Phuket. They are not places for beginner snorkelers so it can be hard to find a suitable boat.

  1. Wow nice article and photos! Snorkeling with manta rays looks very interesting! I’ve heard of many swimming with shark type excursions but manta rays seems quite unique 🙂 The two islands you mentioned are new to me too!
