Surfing in Phuket
The south west monsoon brings wind and waves onto Phuket’s west coast beaches from May to October (from November to April the sea is usually flat) so for six months of the year surfing in Phuket becomes popular. At this time of year overseas surfers join the small local surfing community to ride the waves. May to October is considered Phuket’s low season so these surfers can enjoy cheap hotel deals and beaches without the crowds.
The more popular surf beaches are Naiharn, Kata Noi, Kata, Kalim, Surin, Bangtao and Naiyang beach. Some of these beaches are best suited to experienced surfers like Kalim that has a shallow reef break and Kata Noi that has shallow rocks. Kata beach is ideal for beginner surfers.
For beginners there are surf schools located on Kata beach that offer lessons and board rental. Learning the basics from an instructor is worth it. After that it’s just a case of time on the water to practice.
Boards are available for rent at Kata beach if you don’t have your own. Actually you can surf in Phuket all year round. Just visit the Surf House in either Patong beach or Kata beach.
