Scheduled sailing cruises in Myanmar aboard SY Cataleya from February to March.

Kawthaung – Mergui Archipelago – Kawthaung (9d 8n)

Your sailing trip starts at the colourful border town of Kawthaung in Myanmar, visit the undeveloped, virgin islands of the Mergui Archipelago and disembark again in Kawthaung (Burma).

Day 1. Kawthaung – Barwell Passage (Burma),
You will arrive in Kawthaung either by airplane from Yangon, the old capital of Myanmar, or by longtail boat from Ranong, the Thai border town just across the river. Have your cameras ready, as you will be set back in time by 50 years! Leave Kawthaung after lunch and anchor in a scenic channel with sand spit between two islands “Barwell Passage” (Burma).

Day 2. The Bada island group is a great place to use the kayaks, explore the beaches and watch some rare birds. The night anchorage is a stunning location between a bay and a smaller rock with another sand-spit. Nice beach and reef for snorkeling.

Day 3. Today we visit a sea gypsy village at Pu Nala. You can play football with the children, visit the local monastery, which is also the local school or just stroll around and watch the fishermen doing their chores. After this visit we depart to another bay for a swim, beach and lunch and in the afternoon continue to a hidden passage between two islands. At Selat Galet you see many sea eagles (the big ones), there is a mangrove river for exploring by kayak. There is a small settlement on a spit of land. They even have a school here, so some writing pads and pencils are always appreciated.

Day 4. Clara Island: this is one of the Western islands with good visibility and stunning bays to explore. Rugged bolder formations and impressive views. More great beaches, some bays with a waterfall.

Day 5. After breakfast and a morning swim we continue to Great Swinton island, which has many great beaches and nice snorkeling. In the afternoon we sail to our secret beach for a bonfire and BBQ.

Day 6. We sail further south, to Horsburgh island for lunch and take in the scenery of the huge boulders surrounding this idyllic anchorage. In the afternoon we continue to MacLeod Island, which boasts the only bungalow resort in the whole Mergui Archipelago.

Day 7. There are several great snorkeling places at MacLeod Island and the possibility to climb to the top of the mountain, which gives an incredible view of the surrounding islands. We also visit Davies Island where a fresh water spring awaits you for a refreshing shower. If there is enough time, St Mathews Island has some great beaches to explore too.

Day 8. Early departure for Cocks Comb, a small rugged island with a lagoon inside the island, great to snorkel into the lagoon and perhaps see some small white tip sharks at the entrance. Later we visit Horseshoe Island which is a limestone island area. Several islands can be visited during the day. In the afternoon sail back to the night anchorage at Lighthouse Island outside Kawthaung (to avoid the noise and mosquitoes of the town).

Day 9. We leave early for Kawthaung, after breakfast check out of Burma and a longtail boat brings you to Ranong where the minibus is waiting to drive you to Phuket. Arrive in Phuket at about 15:00 hrs. Another option is to fly to Yangon the former capital of Myanmar.
