What to expect
To do the best Koh Samui snorkeling you need to jump on a boat from Koh Samui and head to Koh Tao (turtle island). A speedboat takes about 90 minutes to get there.
Koh Tao is famous worldwide as one of the most popular places to learn to scuba dive. Most of the shallow reefs are close to the shore and ideal for snorkelers as well as divers.
There are small bays and coves all around the coastline and a day trip will spend the morning at a couple of them including Hin Wong on the east coast, Tian Nok Bay in the south and Sairee bay on the west coast.
The itinerary is not fixed, it’s weather dependent but typically the boat takes snorkelers to a few bays in the morning then moves to Koh Nangyuan for a buffet lunch at midday. The afternoon is spent at Koh Nangyuan where there is more excellent snorkeling (including the Japanese Gardens reef), swimming and beaches to enjoy.
There is also a very nice viewpoint to climb. Koh Nangyuan is a tiny island off the north west coast of Koh Tao. It’s actually three small islets joined by a sandbar formed from the currents. It’s incredibly beautiful.

The speedboat is a bit bumpy but fun and it the quickest way to get there. The reef around Koh Tao was very nice with clear water and lots of coral and fish to see.
