What to expect
Sometimes it is preferable to go from Koh Samui to Koh Tao with the big and comfortable Lomprayah fast catamaran, rather than the speedboat. This is the case from October to January or any other time when the sea may be a little bumpy.
If you are concerned about sea sickness or have young kids this is the better option. It’s also ideal for inexperienced snorkelers or non swimmers because the snorkel guides are excellent and they have all sorts of flotation devises for you to hang on to.
The fast catamaran is a bit slower than a speedboat so you’ll have to start your day earlier (6.30-7.00 am hotel pick up) but it is a more comfortable vessel to travel on.
There are three decks, one air conditioned lower deck with toilets and a refreshments counter, one shaded main deck (which also has a VIP room available for an extra 100 baht) and an upper sundeck. Passengers can move around at leisure and chat together while watching enjoying the cruise.
This boat is the same boat that ferries passengers to Koh Phangnan and Koh Tao so when it reaches Koh Tao passengers are transferred onto another boat for the snorkeling tour. The snorkeling boat then heads around Koh Tao to one of the good reefs like Mango Bay or Lighthouse reef. After about 90 minutes of snorkeling the boat heads back to Nangyaun island where a big buffet lunch is provided on the island.
After lunch you have free and easy time at Koh Nang Yuan until 2.30pm. The beach is beautiful. Most people climb up to the viewpoint which is a fairly easy 10 minute hike except for the last 5 metres at the top which requires some clambering up the granite boulders. The views are worth the effort. To cool off after the climb go for some more snorkeling in the beautiful Japanese Garden reef just off from the beach.

This is the best tour if you ever get seasick, if you have young kids, or if you’ve never tried snorkeling before. The snorkel boat is easy to get into with big ladders. It has toilets and fresh showers. The guides are very good at helping beginners. The coral was much better than I expected. Koh Nang Yuan is also very easy for snorkeling from the beach.
